Hike to Aleccio's plains from Crego along the Devil's Wall

The itinerary starts from the small town of Crego, known for its oratory built on a rocky bump by the “stonecutter priest”, Don Dresco. The priest, with the help of a few parishioners, has built in more than 20 years an amazing architecture using the local stone: the serizzo or "Antigorio’s gneiss".
The itinerary winds up among the woods following the old mule track that leads to Aleccio’s plains. Here, an old cross driven in the terrain tells a story that begins in 1971 when the “Consorzio Opere Agrarie” (Union for Agrarian Works) was established, with the purpose of supporting a return to the traditional agricultural and pastoral activities that, after the industrial and building booms, where abandoned. In particular, thanks to the will of Crodo’s inhabitants, the dirt road that climbs up from Maglioggio to Aleccio’s plains was built. This new infrastructure gave momentum to the restoring of the whole town, by repairing old lodges and building new houses, which were then followed by the building of the aqueduct in 1977 and the power lines in the whole town in 2003. All of these works, outcomes of a great will and collaboration, contributed to the value of Aleccio alp, where the Aleccio cheese is still made today!
The trail then goes down towards Croppo, Salera and Le Quartine until Arvenolo where the Muro del Diavolo (devil’s wall) can be found: a huge megalithic building made with gigantic dry-stones, as long as 6 meters. It’s supposed that this building, perfectly aligned along the cardinal axes, was used as a place of worship. But, following a legend, this wall was the base of the bridge that the devil used to kidnap the girls of Cravegna, the town on the other side of the valley.
