Tour or alps: Staffa of Macugnaga, Fluh alp, Bill alp, Sonobierg alp, Meccia alp

The tour of Macugnanga’s alps begins in the ancient town of Dorf with its church, its oven and the typical wooden houses. The itinerary follows the trail dedicated to Ugo Gozzi, restored in the summer of 2020 by Forestali (Forestry Corps) and by CAI Macugnaga’s volunteers, which, among firs and larches, leads to Fluh alp and Bill alp: two alpine pastures that open themselves with a panoramic view on the east face of Monte Rosa and overlook the sinuous moraine of Belvedere glacier.
Next to them, the Tamback creek is crossed with its series of waterfalls and bowls dug in the rocks, that are called “Di Steinfassjini van di Götwiarchjini” in Titsch language, which means “the bowls of gnomes”.
The trail proceeds along the GTA track (Great Traverse of Alps) which goes up towards Monte Moro pass, to later proceed halfway up reaching Sonobierg alp, whose name means “mount of the Sun”.
The trail goes down towards Meccia alp: a small alpine pasture in ruins where the A.NP.I. (Italian National Association of Partisans) placed a plaque in memory of Don Sisto Bighiani and the massacre of 10 partisans “fallen for a future of peace, hope and rebirth” on the 22nd of October, 1944.
From Meccia alp the trail goes down following the ancient mule track that leads to Prati di Macugnaga.
