The itinerary develops between Val Corcera and Valle Strona, by the slopes of Monte Massone. Val Corcera, the valley that opens from Lake Orta towards Montorfano and Ossola, following the river Strona, was inhabited by the Celtic and later annexed to the Roman Empire. Several villages, well known today, were born during the Middle Ages: Omegna, Gravellona Toce and Casale Corte Cerro. The latter has seen the building of a castle, of which there are no remains today, between the Toce’s plain and Monte Cerano, by the counts of Crusinallo. The name of the valley is a contraction of the names Corte and Cerro: Corcera.
Along the itinerary that starts from Alpe Quaggione there is a constant view on the whole valley, in the sunny days the landscape runs among the peaks of Val Grande, Mottarone, Lake Maggiore and the lakes of Varese, Milan and the Monte Rosa massif and even the peaks of northern Appennini.
The trail begins from the slopes of Monte Zuccaro along the path that goes up along the grassy crest of the so called “Tre Gobbi” (three humps): three small mountaintops, in ascending order, that lead to the peak of Monte Cerano, proceeding then to Poggio Croce. Along the ring trail the ancient pastures of Alpe Cappella, Alpe Morello Sopra and, evntually, Alpe Spanero are crossed.
