The itinerary starts from Scareno, a hamlet of Aurano, in Valle Intrasca. The valley, which once was thriving with pastures, has been the theater of german sweepings in June ‘44, which destroyed not only the pastures, but also the lives of many partisans. It was among these pastures that the Brigata Cesare Battisti (Cesare Battisti Brigade) was patrolling the zone next to Intra and, later, joined the Brigata Generale Perotti (General Perotti Brigade) into the “40 days of freedom” of the Repubblica Ossolana (Republic of Ossola).
The trail winds among the curvy slopes of Monte Bavarione and Monte Vadà, reaching the pastures of Alpe Ca Rod, Alpe La Rocca and Sassello, crosses the characteristic bridge on the Gula and reaches Biogna, Corte Bavarione, L’Or di Casè and Piaggia.
In Piaggia, a typical pre-alpine pasture, the association “Il Dragone di Piaggia” (the dragon of Piaggia) is currently active, working since 2013 to recover, preserve and valorize the pasture, its natural environment and its traditions. Piaggia is directly connected to Scareno by an old mule track that crosses the Ponte del Dragone (bridge of the dragon).
In the surroundings of Piaggia there was a small gold mine and, in the vicinity of San Giovanni creek, there is a millstone that is supposed to have been used to work the auriferous mineral.
