This itinerary passes across Varzo and some of its 53 hamlets, built on a series of morainic terraces, at the feet of mount Cistella. A strategic point for the connections with Switzerland since forever, Varzo boasts a thousand-year old history, tightly connected to Simplon pass and to commercial exchanges. In its historical center there is the Torre della Sosta (tower of stop), a medieval building that was used as headquarter for city assemblies, goods deposit, watchtower and meeting point for merchants. Varzo, as well as many other towns of Ossola, saw many migrations and, as it often happened, the hard-working people of Ossola became wealthy and, after returning to their native town, built villas and palaces which are still well visible in the fabric of the town.
The territory of Varzo is crossed by seven creeks along which stretches of wild garlic grow. The blooming of this spontaneous and edible plant can be seen between April and June and it’s easily recognizable by its unmistakable smell of garlic.
