The itinerary starts from the amazing Toce waterfall which, with its amazing jump of 143 meters in height, has been the symbol of Val Formazza since forever. This valley, at the beginning of the century, has seen a drastic mutation due to the hydroelectric development, which led to the building of dams, railroads, buildings and also some important infrastructures. A heavily discussed project was the building of the dirt road that, from Sotto Frua and passing through Riale, reaches the San Giacomo pass. This new connection has been a fly-wheel for the touristic development of the valley, so much so that in 1923 the iconic Albergo Cascata del Toce (Toce waterfall hotel) was expanded with the project of Architect Piero Portaluppi, the Architect who designed the Wagristoratore at lake Toggia and seven hydroelectric power plants in Ossola. His architectures, modern and progressive, contributed to the development of tourism in Alta Formazza so much so that, in the 30s, the ski race “Piero Portaluppi Cup” was established.
The trail proceeds towards Alpe Ghighel, reaching lake Kastel along a path that, between June and July, sees an amazing blooming. The “Blooming Trail” is part of the Community's Site of Interest “Maria Luisa Mountain Hut” and in the zone of special protection “Valle Formazza” for its outstanding natural and botanical assets of its rare and numerous species of flowers.
The itinerary then crosses a series of small lakes and peat bogs, until the amazing lakes of Boden. Here the trail goes up towards Rupe del Gesso from where an amazing panoramic sight on Val Toggia and its homonymous lake can be seen.
