The three Paione lakes are located at different altitudes. The water from the highest lake flows into the middle, and then it flows to the lowest. The water leaves the lowest lake through torrent Bogna, which gives name to Val Bognanco.

Val Bognanco indeed takes its wealth from water, in particular from its three springs that still feed the thermal SPA and the mineral water factory, whose story begins in the first years of 1900. The Bognanco water factory was officially presented at the Esposizione Universale (EXPO) in Milan in 1906. A documentary filmed in the '30s presents a typical day at the SPA, with a lot of people, and then the bottling of mineral water (the film is available on Archivio Storico Istituto Luce's site).
