In the 30's, Busto Arsizio's CAI's members, who used to frequent the Toggia valley, decieded to promote this area of Val Formazza by building a lodge. Opened in 1937, it was built to pay respects to Maria Luisa Milani, deceased wife of the first president of Busto Arsizio's CAI (Italian Alpine Club).

The road leading to the lodge was built by Edison electric company, with the purpose of building the Toggia dam and Kastel dam. It's a dirt road in good conditions that goes up until San Giacomo pass.

Some hairpins can be "cut" following a trail. During winter, if the road is covered in snow, it's usually plowed and snowshoes are not needed.
