The Airola – Erno creek is born at Mottarone’s base. This first part, in VCO region, is named Airola, while the part close to Novara region is named Erno.
Its waters were of great economic value in the past, they fed the Gignese aqueduct and a small power plant and were used by the paper mill. The creek’s energy was used by several mills and a factory, that took its name from the creek.

The trail starts from the roman church of San Donato in Carpugnino, which is today a national monument, and goes deep in the beech woods until the small town of Nocco. It then descends until the bridge on Erno creek and goes up again through the typical woods and ferns of Mottarone. After crossing a few pastures the trail reaches Martin alp and end along the asphalt road to Graglia Piana and the roman church of San Pietro.
