This trail discovers ancient villages, through historic mule tracks, with panoramic views on lake Orta.
The track winds along Bolzano Novarese’s woods and reaches the Buccione tower, a majestic keep that was part of Buccione castle, owned by the independent Riviera of San Giulio.
The tower’s bell rung on November the 4th 1918 to announce the end of the Great War.
The trail proceeds towards Corconio, where amazing sights on lake Orta can be seen. From this point it goes up along a step road, in a quite bad way, until Lortallo, with its ancient villas along a paved road. After crossing the council road it goes inside the Natural Reserve of Mesma Mountain, rich in ancient findings. One of the oldest necropolis of iron age was found in Ameno’s woods, together with sepulchers and remains of Gaul – Roman populations.
On Mesma Mountain’s feet the trail meets the paved road of "via Crucis" until the peak, where a Franciscan cloister was built. An amazing panoramic terrace on lake Orta. The trail eventually goes inside the woods along the “chestnut way” and along the creek.
