Hike along the old mule track from Cosa to Cosasca

The trail begins at the small town of Cosa and reaches the old town of Cosasca, crossing scattered farmhouses in Trontano, among chestnut woods and a few spaces kept as meadows.
In the years, the inhabitants of mountain hamlets moved along the plain settling into new tows, so much that Cosasca has two cemeteries. The first one was made on the heights, today in the deeps of a chestnut woods, the other, lower on the plain, was made in the 70s.
After Rio Robana and its waterfall, the trail follows the track that clambers, along big steps carved into the stone, until Cà Betullina, Cosasca and the pasture of Prà La Varda. From this point it goes down towards La Selva and eventually reaches the church of San Lorenzo al Pozzo, following a paved mule track.
Concealed by the woods one can see the terracing and the remains of “a topia” systems used to cultivate the Prünent vines, a Nebbiolo native of Val d’Ossola, produced for the Swiss market.
Along the trail, in the old town of Cosasca Monte, the ruins of San Defendente oratory, built in ‘700, and the Madonna delle Grucce chapel can be seen. This one is known to be a veneration place, following the legendary miracle where the butler Domenico Jachetto was saved by his master while he was kept prisoner by some witches.
