Hike from Mescia hamlet to San Michele's vineyards

On the top of a small hill, around a square, the historic center of Mescia hamlet arises. Here the buildings that survived the devastating fire of 1870 are still visible. Most of them are typical farmhouses built around a court, with the typical vault gates. Here the itinerary starts and, passing through the woods of Barquedo and Talonno, leads to the Baraggiola tower, a tower built around the year 1000 as a defensive structure. The path proceeds deep in the woods of oaks and hornbeams where deers, foxes, woodpeckers and red frogs can be seen. Once the San Michele hill is reached, the woods leave room for the vineyards of the DOC wine “Colline Novaresi” (Novara’s hills). In the past the vineyards here were cultivated with the “maggiorina” technique, while the “a spalliera” (wall bars) technique is used today.
On the peak of the hill many archeological artifacts were found and right here a defensive tower used to be, visually connecting with the Baraggiola tower that lies beneath.
