Hike along the "histories of stone" trail and the beola quarry

Beura, once called “Bevola”, takes its name from the stone that characterizes its mountains: the beola, a kind of gneiss that has the peculiarity of being easy to be worked into slabs.

This itinerary in Valle Ogliana is a true trail discovering the stone and its wise uses. From Beura, in fact, the nature trail begins, called histories of stone, along which many artifacts are found, showing the different uses of the beola. Along the hike, on the Ossola side of Val Grande National Park, many buildings are set, entirely made of stone with megalithic architraves and piode (the stone tiles) made of beola. The walk is on a stone road, with stone bridges, stairs and a long mule track which, rhythmed by curbs and paved with slivers, climbs up until Cresta.

Along the path many engravings on the stone are found, almost like an eternal sheet of paper, with dates, names, signs, crosses, cup-marks and even some games, like la tria, which was already played by the Romans, and the filetto, a Medieval game.
The itinerary crosses the ancient town of Bissoggio, with its winepress and the ovens, the Ca’ d’Giani pasture and Alpe Fiesco, offering a wide panorama on Toce’s plain.
