The itinerary leads to the outstanding specimen of “umbrella” beech of Cusio, “fo’ ad l’umbrella” in local dialect, that almost looks like a giant bonsai! This beech, which has seen two or maybe three centuries of history, is quietly set in the beech wood on the slopes of Monte Novesso. Its short and twisted branches, during the winter period, resemble the japanese ornamental gardens, while in the summer, when the green foliage covers the branches, the tree takes its typical umbrella shape.
The ring itinerary twists and turns along the slopes of Monte Mazzone and Monte Castello, the latter holding the cross of Nonio and the cross of Cesara. The trail, which partially runs along the Qualba river and the Della Corda creek, crosses Alpe Ranghera, the “two beeches” that represent a crossroad of two trails, Alpe Soliva, Alpe Bracca, Alte Trapuscera and runs by the lakes of Nonio, eventually proceeding along the Trail of Elves.
