Pian Cavallone is a 400 mt long plain, 1500 mt above sea level. It can be reached by following the trail that starts from Porta chapel and goes up through firs and pines until the woods’ end. You now have to look down the valley to admire the extent of lake Maggiore’s basin. The trail proceeds until CAI’s lodge “Pian Cavallone”, built in 1882. Further ahead it reaches the plain that divides Val Pogallo and Intrasca with its pastures, giving amazing views on lake Maggiore and Val Grande’s park.
The Val Grande National Park, a protected natural area, it the largest wild zone of Alps, devoid of human settlements. In Malesco’s and Miazzina’s necropolis some grave goods and some parietal engravings were found, and one of those became the Park’s logo. The most important discovery is the “mascherone” (big mask) of Vogogna, a face carved in ollare stone. Dating to the Celtic tradition, it was made to honor the god of wild nature.
Be careful while hiking through Val Grande. There is no cellphone signal and it’s easy to get lost in such a large park.
